Wikipedia
starts out to define 'Search Engine Optimization'
as
"...the
process of improving the volume and quality of traffic
to a web site from search engines via "natural"
("organic" or "algorithmic") search results"
but Fortunately for you, we are going to break this
down into more common easy to understand english.
The
Basics
Search
Engine Optimization (SEO) is simply the art of optimizing
a website in order to make it more easily found
on the internet. I have referred to SEO as an 'Art'
because this is not a simple task for the average
person. Although the process of Optimizing a website
is not as technical as you might think, it does
require minimal programming knowledge and the ability
to withstand repetative and redundant 'time consuming'
work that is often tiring to say the least. Below
we will take a closer look at the three main aspects
around what makes SEO possible.
The
'Programers' Aspect.
Minimal
web design experience is in fact needed to optimize
a website due to the fact that half of your entire
SEO will take place in the html (html, htm, asp,
php, or whatever it is you are using) code itself.
I am not just referring to the meta tags either.
In the 'Internal Code' section of this site, I will
go into more detail on which codes you will want
to concetrate on the most and what to do with them.
The
'Repetative' Aspect
Repetativeness
is the most common reason why people seek SEO professionals
to do the work for them. Optimizing a website is
not as simple as just placing your website in a
search engine and hoping that you keywords and descriptions
do all the work for you. In order to optimize a
website properly, you must be sure that the website
can be found in the most relative locations on the
internet as well as the search engine. I have discovered
that by strategically placing your website information
in just the right places, you can reach top listings
in major search engines without ever submitting
your site to a search engine to begin with. But
this involves a long painstaking task of doing this
in many locations throughout the internet.
The
'Submission' Aspect
I
have mentioned above that proper and strategic placement
of your website can result in never even having
to submit your site to a search engine but I do
not recommend skipping this step. Strategic placement
is a surefire way of getting listed fast but only
by submitting your site to search engines are you
more likely to reach the top of the results pages.
Submitting your website to search engines is also
referred to as an 'Art' because in order to do so
you must also abide by common rules and regulations
that enable you to refrain from being sandboxed
by most search engine sites.
